The criterions for selecting gas turbine intake filter
This article is intended for helping the customers or user how to make the criterions for selecting filters in order to get the best one for their own benefits.
We refer to:
Ashrae 52.2:2007
EN779:2002 > ISO 16890
TERMINOLOGY AND DEFINITION
Both of the above standards refer to the test methods of the filters including the ones for Gas Turbines. These standards mainly give the idea about the followings;
Both of the above standards refer to the test methods of the filters including the ones for Gas Turbines. These standards mainly give the idea about the followings;
- Initial Pressure drop : This is the pressure drop of the filter when the filter is new and no dust is loaded.
- Initial efficiency : More than 10 different particle sizes are measured during the tests at the same time. These are between 0.2 and 10 micron particles. For each particle size the efficiency is measured before any dust load.
- Dust holding capacity: The Ashrae dust is loaded 4 times to the filter. When the required final pressure drop is reached the dust loading is stopped. Dust holding capacişty of a filter determines the service life of the filter.
- Average efficiency :After each dust load the particle efficiencies are measured. At the end of the test the average of the measured efficiencies are calculated. This determines the filter average efficiency and filter class.
- Discharged efficieny : Some synthetic filters in the market are electro-charged in order to have high initial efficiency. For example some producers applies electro-charge on their media. However after some time (couple of weeks) the electro-charge disappears on the media and the efficiency of the filter is reduced a lot. In order to determine the real efficiency the filters are discharged by using a chemical and tested. Normally on a good quality filter there should not be any difference between a discharged efficiency and standard efficiency.
THE CONSIDERATIONS TO DETERMINE THE CRITERIONS
By the help of this information can helps the customers to be able to create the tender specifications for the future. Their target should be to get the followings;
- Low Initial pressure drop.
- High initial efficiency.
- High average efficiency.
- High dust holding capacity (by using Ashrae dust only. There are some other dusts for testing like SAE dust which increases the dust holding capacity. Make sure that the tender specifications mention Ashrae dust to be used during the tests).
- The same initial efficiency has to be achieved when the filter is discharged.
WHAT CAN WE DO FOR YOU ?
If the USERS or GT's operators can writes the above parameters to the tender specifications then they will get the best filter to their turbine. They need to send the filters to the test companies by themselves after the filters are delivered to them. They will make sure that the suppliers deliver correct quality filters. After getting the test report from independent test companies they can look at the above mentioned parameters and approve the filter or reject it. This is in general the system normally they have in Europe and the suppliers have no chance to cheat.
