Filter Press

Categories : Wastewater Treatment

In wastewater treatment processes, biological and chemical treatment can generate sludge as a by-product. This sludge cannot simply be discharged because it still contains a high amount of water and solids that require further management.

One commonly used method for reducing the water content of sludge is a filter press. A filter press works based on the principle of pressure filtration, separating water from solids using pressure and producing filtered water (filtrate) and denser sludge in the form of a filter cake.

WHAT IS A FILTER PRESS?

A filter press is equipment used to separate liquid and solid contents from slurry or sludge in wastewater treatment processes. In wastewater treatment applications, a filter press is commonly used for sludge dewatering, which reduces the water content of sludge, making its volume smaller and easier to handle.

WHAT IS THE FUNCTION OF A FILTER PRESS?

  • Reduces the water content of sludge
  • Reduces sludge volume
  • Increases solids concentration
  • Makes sludge handling easier
  • Reduces the space required for sludge storage
  • Makes transportation and further sludge management easier
  • Helps reduce transportation and disposal costs

HOW DOES A FILTER PRESS WORK?

The filter press process can be simplified as follows:

Sludge → Filter Press → Filtrate + Filter Cake

1. Sludge Is Pumped into the Filter Press: Sludge from the wastewater treatment system is transferred to the filter press using a pump.

2. Sludge Enters the Filter Chamber: The sludge fills the chambers between the plates equipped with filter cloth.

3. Pressure Separates Water and Solids: Pressure during the feeding process forces the liquid through the filter cloth, while most of the solids are retained by the filter media.

4. Water Exits as Filtrate: Water that passes through the filter cloth exits through the filtrate channel and can be returned to the treatment system depending on the process design.

5. Filter Cake Is Formed: The retained solids continue to accumulate and form a dense layer known as the filter cake.

6. The Filter Press Is Opened: Once the filtration process is complete, the plates are opened and the filter cake is removed for further handling or management.

FILTER PRESS APPLICATIONS

Filter presses can be used in various processes that generate slurry or sludge, including:

  • Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP)
  • Sewage Treatment Plants (STP)
  • Food and beverage industries
  • Chemical industries
  • Textile industries
  • Manufacturing industries
  • Mineral processing
  • Processes that generate slurry or suspended solids

For wastewater treatment applications, the design and specifications of the filter press should be adjusted according to sludge flow rate, solids concentration, sludge characteristics, dewatering requirements, and other process conditions.
