WHAT IS A FILTER PRESS?

filter press is a device used in Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP) to separate solids from liquids. Wastewater or sludge is pumped into the filter chambers and then subjected to pressure, allowing the cleaner liquid to separate and flow out while leaving behind a solid cake that can be further managed or disposed of at a significantly reduced volume.

A filter press uses plates and filter cloths to retain solid particles and form a filter cake, while the clean liquid (filtrate) flows out of the system.

WHAT IS THE FUNCTION OF A FILTER PRESS?

• Reduces the water content in sludge
• Reduces sludge volume
• Increases solids content
• Makes sludge handling easier
• Reduces the space required for sludge storage
• Facilitates transportation and further sludge management
• Reduces transportation and disposal costs

HOW DOES A FILTER PRESS WORK?

In simple terms, the process and operation of a filter press can be summarized as follows:

Sludge → Filter Press → Filtrate + Filter Cake

  1. Sludge Is Pumped into the Filter Press: Sludge from the WWTP system is transferred to the filter press using a pump.

  2. Sludge Enters the Filter Chambers: The sludge fills the chambers between the plates, which are equipped with filter cloths.

  3. Pressure Separates Water and Solids: The pressure generated during the feeding process forces the liquid through the filter cloth, while most of the solids are retained by the filter media.

  4. Water Exits as Filtrate: The water that passes through the filter cloth flows out through the filtrate outlet and can be returned to the treatment system according to the process design.

  5. Filter Cake Is Formed: The retained solids continue to accumulate and form a compact layer known as the filter cake.

  6. The Filter Press Is Opened: Once the filtration process is complete, the plates are opened and the filter cake is removed for further handling or management.

FILTER PRESS COMPONENTS

  1. Filter Plate: Plates arranged to form multiple chambers (filter chambers) that contain the sludge during the filtration process. They are commonly made from materials such as polypropylene (PP).

  2. Filter Cloth: A filtering fabric installed on the filter plates. It retains the solid particles in the sludge while allowing water to pass through as filtrate.

  3. Hydraulic Cylinder / Hydraulic System: The hydraulic system provides the pressure needed to compress and seal all filter plates during the filtration process.

  4. Filter Frame: The main structure that supports the filter plates, filter cloths, hydraulic system, and other components.

  5. Sludge Feed Pump: A pump that transfers sludge from the sludge holding tank or collection tank to the filter press at the appropriate pressure.

  6. Filtrate Outlet: The outlet through which water separated from the sludge flows after passing through the filter cloth.

  7. Filter Cake: The solid material retained between the filter cloths and accumulated during the filtration process. Once the process is complete, the cake is removed from the filter press.

  8. Manifold / Piping System: The piping system that regulates the flow of sludge into and filtrate out of the filter press unit.

  9. Control Panel: A control panel used to operate the system, including the pump and hydraulic system, particularly for units equipped with automatic operation.

  10. Plate Shifting / Plate Opening Mechanism: A mechanism used to open and separate the filter plates after the filtration process is complete, allowing the filter cake to be removed.
