CHEMICAL CLEANING FILLER TO OPTIMIZE COOLING TOWER PERFORMANCE

A cooling tower is a device used in industrial processes to remove heat or reduce the temperature of the water used in the cooling system. The main function of a cooling tower is to cool water that has been used in industrial processes. The temperature of the water increases during the cooling process as it absorbs heat from the equipment or machine being cooled. Cooling towers help remove this heat by flowing hot water over the tower structure, where the water is then sprayed into the air and evaporates. This evaporation process lowers the water temperature, so that cold water can return to the cooling system for reuse.

COOLING TOWER COMPONENTS

In general, the following are the components contained in a cooling tower:

  • Cold Water Basin
A water reservoir that has gone through a cooling process. This water will be reused as a heat transfer medium or heat exchange in a process tool as a cooling medium
  • Water Inlet
The place where air enters from the environment into the cooling tower, which acts as a cooling medium
  • Filler or Fill media
This component serves as the epicenter of heat exchange, facilitating the interaction between hot water and cooling air. With a porous or perforated structure, fillers optimize airflow and water contact, expediting the evaporation and cooling process
  • Spray Nozzle
Instrumental in dispersing hot water into fine droplets, akin to rainfall, enabling efficient heat exchange upon contact with the fill media.
Tap to spread hot water into splashes like rain or fine droplets, then fall onto the fill media, then heat exchange process occurs. This spraying process expand the heat exchange area. So the heat exchange will be maximized
  • Drift Eliminator
Designed to capture water particles suspended in the air or carried by airflow, thereby mitigating environmental dispersion and ensuring water conservation within the tower
  • Other Components
Supplementary elements vary contingent upon the cooling tower's type and design

FILLER AS AN IMPORTANT COMPONENT IN COOLING TOWER

Central to the cooling tower's functionality is the filler or fill media, which assumes a pivotal role in augmenting the interface between air and water. By enhancing contact surface area, facilitating uniform water distribution, and optimizing air-water interaction, fillers ensure efficient cooling processes. Therefore, meticulous care and maintenance of fillers are imperative to sustain peak cooling performance.

FULFILLING THE IMPERATIVE : FILLER CHEMICAL CLEANING

Over time, cooling tower fillers accrue scale and impurities, silica scale and other minerals, impeding airflow and compromising cooling efficiency. Chemical cleaning of fillers is indispensable to eradicate these deposits to eradicate these deposits, enhancing operational efficiency, prolonging equipment lifespan, ensuring uninterrupted cooling performance and environmental compliance. Filler that has been used for a certain time will be covered with crust and dirt which looks like a layer of white solid.

PROCESS OF CLEANING COOLING TOWER

To dissolve deposits and grime, fillers must be immersed in cleaning chemicalAquaright D200 Solvent solution, one of the top chemicals by PT ZEFA that is based on hydrochloric acid, effective for removing hard deposits (chemical cleaning for removing inorganic and heavy scale) formed from deposits of hard salts compounds adhering strongly to boiler pipes, condenser tubes (H/E), or evaporators in coolers or calorifiers. This chemical is commonly referred to as Acid-Cleaner.

The fillers are immersed in the Aquaright D200 Solvent solution for 2 hours. This chemical is designed to dissolve silica deposits without damaging the filler material. After soaking for 2 hours, the fillers are cleaned using a high-pressure water jet spray. This process aims to remove residues from the previous cleaning solution and ensure that the fillers are clean and functioning optimally.

Once the cleaning process is completed, the condition of the fillers is rechecked to ensure that deposits and grime have been effectively removed, and the fillers are ready for reuse in the cooling system.

By regularly cleaning cooling tower fillers, the cooling system will continue to operate efficiently, safely, and reliably in the long term. Proactive steps like these will improve operational efficiency and extend the service life.

PT Zefa Valindo Jaya can perform on-site cleaning of cooling tower fillers by deploying a team or dismantling and performing filler cleaning at the ZEFA workshop located in Harapan Indah, Bekasi. Contact us for appointments and inquiries by phone at 021 8873 531, or email us at info@zevanya.com.
